Our Belief

The name Zion is often used to describe a place appointed by the Lord where his followers can live and serve God. Scripture refers to Zion as the “City of Holiness” and a “city of refuge” where the Lord protects his people from the evils in the world. For the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church, “Zion” signifies a biblically rooted identity as the “City of God” and a holy gathering place, symbolizing freedom, spiritual refuge, and divine protection. Chosen in 1800, the name emphasizes the church’s foundation on scripture and its role as a sanctuary for people of African descent. Key aspects of “Zion” for the AME Zion Church include:

• Biblical Foundation: It was chosen because it was the most frequent biblical term used to designate the “church of God,” emphasizing a spiritual home for believers.

• A Place of Refuge and Freedom: Historically, “Zion” provided a “city of refuge” for worshippers seeking independence from racial oppression and religious restrictions in the late 18th century.

• Identity of African Descent: The name highlights the church’s identity as a denomination founded by and for people of African descent, fostering pride in their background.

• Distinction: In 1848, it was formally added to the denominational title to distinguish the church from the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church founded by Richard Allen, creating a distinct identity.

• Spiritual Significance: Beyond a physical building, it represents a “City of Holiness” that connects believers to the biblical tradition of God’s chosen people. 

As Methodists, there is a method to the way in which we practice our faith.  We use our methods to inform, to live, and to engage the community for Christ. We stand firmly on the principles established by our forefathers, and every Sunday, we affirm our belief by reciting the Apostle’s Creed, declaring our Vision, and proclaiming our Mission.
